Long-term Growth and Persistence of Blue Oak (quercus Douglasii) Seedlings in a California Oak Savanna

We report on growth and survivorship of two cohorts of blue oaks Quercus douglasii Hook. & Arn. (Fagaceae) monitored at Hastings Reservation in Monterey County, California, the first growing in an unprotected old field and measured as seedlings in 1965 and the second planted as acorns in 1985 in several sites differing in their degree of protection from grazing. Growth of all individuals was ex...

A site model for Pyrenean oak (Quercus pyrenaica) stands using a dynamic algebraic difference equation

This paper presents a growth model for dominant-height and site-quality estimations for Pyrenean oak (Quercus pyrenaica Willd.) stands. The Bertalanffy–Richards function is used with the generalized algebraic difference approach to derive a dynamic site equation. This allows dominant-height and site-index estimations in a compatible way, using any desirable base age and allowing estimations to ...

Establishing a Range-Wide Provenance Test in Valley Oak (Quercus lobata Née) at Two California Sites

We present the methods used to establish a provenance test in valley oak, Quercus lobata. Nearly 11,000 acorns were planted and 88 percent of those germinated. The resulting seedlings were measured after 1 and 2 years of growth, and were outplanted in the field in the winter of 2014-2015. This test represents a long-term resource for both research and conservation.

Decomposition and nutrient dynamics of oak Quercus spp . logs after five years of decomposition

Decomposition of oak Quercus spp. logs (25-35 cm diameter, 3 m long) was compared among log substrates in Oregon, Minnesota, Kansas and North Carolina during the first five years on the ground. Decomposition of whole logs (weighted by substrate) averaged 0.069 yr~' (±0.16 SD), but followed a 2-exponential model (k = 0.12 yr" year 1 and k = 0.06 yr" years 2-5), reflecting qualitative differences...
